During the first lockdown of 2020, I was thrilled to be asked to contribute to The British Museum podcast and blog with two features; the first on ice cream (one of my favourite subjects) and the second on afternoon tea. These accounts aimed to wet the appetite of anyone interested in food history, whilst connecting these seemly quotidian topics into much wider subjects of empire, power and status.
In these strange times it’s more important than ever that cultural institutions are accessible online and that the content available reflects the complex, and at times uncomfortable, narratives of history. Over recent years The British Museum have developed a stellar collection of digital content that aims to explore these layered histories.
