This Friday I hope you’ll join me for The Digital Dinner Party - a unique taste of The British Academy Virtual Summer Showcase, with discussion and delicacies aplenty. The live event can be joined via Zoom Webinar on Friday 19 June at 6.30pm, with the recipes available in advance for anyone who would like to ‘cook-along’.
For the first course, a welcome cocktail, I was inspired by the research of Dr Sue Miller, who has been using experimental archaeology to recreate the live sounds of mid-twentieth-century Cuban dance music. Her work draws together the worlds of Latin America and New York to create a sensory cocktail of sound - as expressed by her band Charanga del Norte, whom this cocktail has been named after:
The Charanga del Norte
A twist on a classic Frozen Daiquiri.
Super refreshing, zesty, lively and “slushy”.
Like the music, it has no edges, it envelops you.
Ingredients:
2 parts Light rum
1 part Fresh lime juice
1 part Demerara sugar syrup
Ice Crushed (using a blender)
Garnish Apple spiral
Steps:
First make the Demerara sugar syrup
200g Demerara sugar, 200ml boiling water
Combine, stir, leave to cool (2 hours min)
Add all the ingredients into a shaker
Shake until well-chilled
(Alternatively put the whole lot in a blender)
Pour into a large coupe
Garnish with a sliced apple spiral
Sip and listen to the track below
